After a six-under round on Thurssday, Rory McIlroy shared the first round lead at The Memorial with Chris Riley. McIlroy made seven birdies in his round while Riley had eight. New World No. 1 Luke Donald was four shots off the lead in a tie for 22nd place. Overall, it was a good day for Americans as they held 19 of the top 20 positions on the leaderboard.

“I feel as if I’m playing good enough to get myself in the hunt come Sunday,” McIlroy said after his round. “The conditions are perfect out there. You can’t really get it much better.”

Riley, currently ranked No. 280 in the world,  has missed cuts in six of his last 13 events and hasn’t had a top 10 finish since the Sony Open back in January. Chris DiMarco and Josh Teater shared third place, one shot behind McIlroy and Riley. Rickie Fowler, Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson and Stewart Cink were among nine Americans tied for fifth, two shots off the lead.

Luke Donald was enjoying his first tournament as the world’s top-ranked golfer. “I heard a few ‘No. 1’ shouts and stuff like that, so you feed off that,” he said. “It feels good.” Donald also found time to tweet about freak calendar occurences: “Fun fact: July 2011 has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays. Only happens once every 823 years.
