Tiger Woods shot his lowest final round of his illustrious career on Sunday, but even an 8-under 62 was only good enough for a tie for second as Rory McIlroy held on to win the Honda Classic by two strokes. With the victory, McIlroy became the new World Number One and the second-youngest golfer in history to hold the top ranking, behind only Tiger.
From Tiger’s comments after Sunday’s final round, you’d almost think he had won the tournament. He did momentarily move just a stroke behind McIlroy with an eagle on the last hole, but McIlroy was still on the 13th green and sunk a birdie putt to go back up two. Still Tiger reveled in his big finish. “I absolutely killed a 5-iron [on the final hole],” said Tiger. “I’m thrilled with my play … It was just a matter of time before things fell into place.” What would he have been saying if he actually won?
McIlroy was awfully pleased with himself too. “It was always a dream of mine to become the world number one and the best player in the world, or whatever you want to call it,” said the new World Number One. “But I didn’t know I would be able to get here this quickly. Hopefully, I can hold on to it for a little longer.”
McIlroy has now finished in the top three in eight of his last 11 events. McIlroy ends Luke Donald’s reign at Number One after 40 weeks, and is the fourth player to hold the top spot since Tiger lost it back in 2010.
