Maybe San Jaun Will Watch The Marlins

A three-game series in San Juan, Puerto Rico between the New York Mets and Florida Marlins is in the works for this June.

Sure, the Mets are a pretty popular team, with their handsome third baseman and Cy Young winning-ace, but it’s no secret that the Marlins struggle to fill their seats at home.  However, the series — originally set in Miami —  is scheduled for June 28-30 at Hiram Bithorn Stadium, where it could be a different fish tale.

Will the fans file in as they did to see the Red Sox play the Athletics in Tokyo back in 2008? Hiram Bithorn hosted 22 Montreal Expos home games in each of the 2003 and 2004 seasons before the franchise became the Nationals and relocated to Washington. Average attendance there dropped from 14,000 in 2003 to 10,000 in 2004.

Last season, the Marlins were second to last in attendance (to the A’s) with 18,771 fans visiting Land Shark Stadium on average. People risked their lives jumping over roughly 15 empty seats 12 rows down to find home run balls there. Maybe their new ballpark, set to open in 2012, will bring more business if this global baseball thing doesn’t pan out. As the saying goes, “if you build it, they might come… if there’s nothing on television.”

MLB brass and the player’s union are also planning a Spring Training trip to Taiwan for the Dodgers to play against the country’s national team on March 13-14.
