Marlins Hire 80-Year-Old Manager

The Florida Marlins looked to be in decent shape to make the playoffs through May, then they won only one game in the first 18 days of June, and their manager retired this weekend after less than a year on the job. The Marlins are expected to bring in a bold choice as interim manager — 80-year-old Jack McKeon, who led the franchise to its second world title in 2003.

McKeon took over the 2003 in mid-season too, and that team was 10 games under .500 in May before going on a tear that ended with a shocking World Series win over the New York Yankees.  It makes sense why the Marlins would want him back.  What makes less sense is why he would want to come back at 80 to a team that’s got a decent pitching staff and not much else.

After getting swept by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays over the weekend, the Marlins (32-40) are in last place in the National League East, 12.5 games behind the Philadelphia Phillies. Florida is only 7.5 games out of the wild card though, so maybe that’s what McKeon is telling himself.

Back in 2003, McKeon was the third-oldest manager in Major League history, now he’s the second-oldest, behind only 87-year-old Connie Mack. McKeon was born in the same year as Earl Weaver, and is actually older than Whitey Herzog and Sparky Anderson.
