Since joining the Philadelphia Phillies before last season, ace Roy Halladay has dominated divisional opponents, going 18-2 against NL East opponents. The Florida Marlins hung the second of those losses on Halladay on Tuesday night to move back within two games of the division leading Phillies. Marlins ace Josh Johnson has been the opposing pitcher in both of Halladay’s losses.

Johnson struggled early on, falling behind 1-0 in the second and needing 60 pitches to get through the first three innings. But Johnson pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the second and drew a walk that led to Florida’s first run in the bottom of the third, then settled down to make it through seven innings with seven strikeouts and just the one run allowed.

With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Halladay let the eventual game-winning run get into scoring position on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Chris Coghlan put the Marlins ahead for good with an RBI single off Halladay. “I don’t know what the playoffs are like,” the inexperienced Coghlan said after the game, “but this is as exciting as it gets in a regular season game.”

At 21-14, the Marlins are off to their best start in franchise history, even better than the two years they won the World Series. On Wednesday night, the Phillies will send Cliff Lee to face Ricky Nolasco in the final game of the series.
