Mariano Rivera Tears ACL, Probably Done For Season

New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera tore his ACL before Thursday’s loss in Kansas City. The 42-year-old reliever is likely out for the season and his career may be over as well. Rivera was hurt going through his usual pregame routine of shagging fly balls during batting practice, and his teammates responded by losing their third straight game, this time 4-3 to a 8-16 Royals team.

Asked if he thought his career might be over, Rivera said: “At this point, I don’t know. Going to have to face this first. It all depends on how the rehab is going to happen, and from there, we’ll see. … It’s not a good situation, but again, we’ve been through this before, and we’re being tested one more time. It’s more mentally than physical, you know? You feel like you let your team down.

In 2008, Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo tore his ACL on May 1 and returned to start the first game of that year’s playoffs. But Gallardo was not 42 years old. And the Yankees  are 13-12 and in fourth place in the American League East, so just making the playoffs may be a struggle.

For now, the Yankees could only feel sorry for themselves, something third baseman Alex Rodriguez excels at. “I saw it all go down,” said A-Rod. “It’s hard even to talk about it tonight. I mean, Mo has meant so much to us on a personal level, and his significance on the field, on the mound. But the bottom line is we’re the New York Yankees, and nobody is going to feel sorry for us.”
