Filipino boxing sensation won the vacant WBC Super Welterweight championship at Arlington, Texas on Nov. 13th as he laid a 12-round beating on Antonio Margarito of Mexico in front of about 41,000 fans at Cowboys Stadium. Pacquiao pounded out a unanimous decision to win his eighth championship belt in eight different divisions.

Pacquiao’s legs carried him throughout the fight and they may have even carried Margarito part 0f the way as it looked like Pacquiao could have probably ended it if he wanted to. Perhaps it was his intention to inflict some punishment on Margarito after all of the bad blood during the pre-fight hype. Whatever the case, Pacquiao bust up Margarito’s face pretty good with his speed and precision as he landed 474 punches during the fight. Margarito’s face was a mess and he will need surgery to repair a fractured orbital bone under his right eye.

The first couple of rounds were fairly even, but Pacquiao, who is also the WBO Welterweight Champion of the world took over in the third and was basically in cruise control for the rest of the way against the bigger and heavier Mexican.

Pacquiao landed with shots from all angles and Margarito mainly had success with his uppercuts. Pacquiao said he wished the ref stopped the fight as he didn’t want to cause any permanent damage to Margarito and his trainer Freddie roach said Margarito’s corner should have stopped the bout. It looked like Pacquiao was going to finish him off as early as the fourth round, but to his credit, Margarito hung in there.

Margarito landed a solid body shot in the sixth round that visibly hurt Pacquiao and the Filipino later said he was lucky to make it out of the round. He also added it was the toughest fight of his career. However, that could be expected as he was fighting a much bigger opponent and moved up in weight. The fight was officially held at a catch weight of 151 lbs. However, the fight stats show he won with ease as he out-landed Margarito 411 to 135 in power punches. The scores of the fight were 120-108, 118-110, and 119-109.

Pacquiao, who is a congressman in his native Philippines, has said he will carry on boxing and hopes to meet Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the pound-for-pound title. Another fight that would make sense could be against Shane Mosley, who knocked Margarito out in the ninth round in 2009. With the win, Pacquiao raises his record to 52-3-2, with 38 Kos, while Margarito drops to 38-7, with 27 Kos.
