There are a few NHL teams celebrating special anniversaries in the 2016/17 season, but of course just one of them will be hosting the All-Star weekend. It’s now been confirmed that the honour will go to Los Angeles as the Kings will be celebrating their 50th season in the league. However, the St. Louis Blues, Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins also launched their NHL franchises in 1967 along with the Minnesota North Stars and California Seals, two franchises which no longer exist. In addition, the Toronto Maple Leafs will be celebrating their 100th birthday as will the league itself as it was launched back in 1917.

The NHL All-Star weekend was recently held from January 29 to 31 in Nashville, Tennessee and it was rumoured there that the next game would go to Los Angeles, and then confirmed by the NHL shortly after. The Kings will host the All-Star skills competition on Jan. 28th 2017 and the All-Star Game will take place the following day Jan. 29. Los Angeles first hosted the NHL All-Star Game in 1981.Gary Bettman, the league’s commissioner made the formal announcement by stating, “The Los Angeles Kings and Staples Center will serve as the respective host team and venue for the 2017 NHL All-Star Weekend.”

This will be the third time the All-Star Game has been awarded to Los Angeles. It will also be the second event to take place at the Staples Center. The first All-Star contest back in 1981 was held at the old Los Angeles Forum. Los Angeles also held the 2002 festivities. The Kings organization had reason to believe the All-Star Game would be awarded to Toronto to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Maple Leafs. However, Toronto has already been granted hosting rights to the 17-game 2016 World Cup of Hockey as well as the 2017 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships.

There’s also a good chance the Maple Leafs will be awarded the 2017 NHL Winter Classic as reports suggest it will be held at BMO Field, the home stadium of Toronto FC of Major League Soccer (MLS). As of yet there has been no word on any special league events to be held commemorating the 50th birthdays of the Philadelphia Flyers, St. Louis Blues and Pittsburgh Penguins. There’s also speculation that the NHL awarded the Kings with next year’s events as a reward for the franchise winning the Stanley Cup championship twice in the past four years.
