The Los Angeles Kings won the Stanley Cup for the second time in the past three NHL seasons with a dramatic and thrilling 3-2 win in double overtime at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on June 13. Alec Martinez notched the winner on a rebound at the 14:43 mark of the second overtime period to send the home fans into a frenzy. All three games in Los Angeles went into overtime with two of them being double overtimes as the Kings wrapped up the best-of-seven series in five games.
The Kings played 26 playoff games this season, which ties the record for a cup-winning team with the Calgary Flames and Philadelphia Flyers, and went 5-2 in overtime outings. They won four games while trailing at the end of the second period and fought back from a 3-0 game deficit against the San Jose Sharks in the first round of the postseason to win the series in seven. The Kings faced seven elimination games during the playoff run and won them all while the Rangers went five out of six.
Los Angeles has now won 17 out of their past 22 playoff games at home and six out of the last seven. It was the second time they’ve won the Cup at home and are the only team to clinch the trophy in their home rink in the past seven years. Kings’ winger Justin Williams was named the winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player in the playoffs. He posted nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points in the 26-game run and was a plus 13.
The Cup-winning game against the Rangers now stands as the longest in the history of the Kings as it went 94 minutes and 43 seconds. The previous record was 91:40 during the fifth game of the Western Conference Final against the Chicago Blackhawks last year. Both the Kings and Rangers rattled shots off the goalpost in the overtime session while Rangers’ goalie Henrik Lundqvist and Kings’ keeper Jonathan Quick made some amazing saves.
But finally, the Kings triumphed in their 115th overall match of the 2013/season when Martinez pounced on a rebound and buried a shot that Lundqvist had no chance of stopping. It was the 93rd postseason game of the year in the NHL, which breaks the old record of 92 which was set in the 1990/91 campaign.
