The Juan Manuel Lopez vs Rafael Marquez bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Nov. 6th live up to its pre-fight hype, but unfortunately it was cut short when Marquez had to retire at the end of the eighth round due to a shoulder injury. Lopez kept his WBO Featherweight Championship belt with the win.

The 35-year-old Marquez of Mexico showed that he’s still a forced to be reckoned with in the featherweight division as he gave as good as he took in the exciting brawl. Many fans weren’t sure how much Marquez would have left in the tank against the undefeated champion from Puerto Rico, especially after having fought four wars with Israel Vasquez.

The fight unraveled as most fans hope it would with both boxers giving it their all In front of a fanatical crowd. The fight was originally scheduled to take place in September, but had to be pushed back several weeks due to a thumb injury suffered by Marquez.

Lopez (30-0, 27 KO) and Marquez (39-6, 35 KO) engaged in the sort of balls to the wall, all-out

Both fighters took turns inflicting punishment on each other and both were staggered during the bout. You can add this as another fight that may haven’t taken a lot out of Marquez, but that will remain to be seen in the future. Boxing fans would love to see a rematch between these two warriors, but it’s unsure if one will be coming.

This was definitely the biggest win of Lopez’s career, but it would be understandable if he felt a little disappointed about how it ended. I’m sure he was relieved, but would have rather won the fight in a different fashion.

Both boxers were looking for a knockout rather than a points win and that’s typical of Mexican vs Puerto Rican matchups as there’s a huge rivalry between them. The fight may have been shorter than everybody expected, but it was definitely sweet while it lasted. It could be considered as fight of the year as both men rocked each other throughout with all out attacks.

With the win Lopez raised his unbeaten record to 30-0, with 27 Kos and Marquez dropped to 39-6, with 35 Kos).

It’ll be interesting to see who Lopez and Marquez take on next and hopefully Marquez’s injury won’t have him on the shelf for too long. His 35-year-old body has been through a lot, but hopefully he’s still got more fight left in him to entertain the fans.
