Detroit Lions defensive standout Ndamukong Suh picked about the worst possible time to get himself kicked out of his team’s Thanksgiving Day loss to the still undefeated Green Bay Packers, and now faces an NFL review of his actions and a likely suspension. Suh appeared to stomp on a prone Packers lineman in the third quarter, but swears his actions were misinterpreted.
The Lions were trailing 7-0 and had stomped Green Bay on third & goal before Suh game the Pack new life with a fifteen-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and his ejection. “I was on top of a guy being pulled down and trying to get up off of the ground and … you see me pushing his helmet down because I’m trying to remove myself from the situation and as I’m getting up I’m getting pushed so I’m getting myself on balance and getting out of the situation,” explained Suh. “With that, a lot of people are going to interpret it as, create their own storylines for seeing what they want to interpret it. But I know what I did and the man upstairs knows what I did.”
The Packers went on to win the game 27-15, and now the focus is on what consequences the league will hand down to Suh. Mike Pereira, a former NFL vice president of officiating now working for Fox Sports, writes that “the question won’t be if the NFL will suspend Suh, but when — and for how many games.” Suh has already been fined three times this season.
Suh also got some criticism from the local press in Detroit. “Bad, angry and stupid are no way to go through Thanksgiving, son,” scolded one local columnist.
Now 7-4, the Lions are also in danger of missing the playoffs after their memorable fast start. Next week, they play the first-place Saints on the road on Sunday Night Football, and then have road games left against the Chargers and Packers, and two home games against the Raiders and Vikings. It’s hard to see the Lions finishing better than 10-6, and then they might have to rely on tiebreakers to get in as a wild card.
