For the second straight year the Pittsburgh Penguins ended their season with a Game 7 loss at home. The Penguins have been without their two best scorers since January, so it’s perhaps fitting that their season ended with a 1-0 shutout loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning and 41-year-old goaltender Dwayne Roloson, who stopped all 36 shots he saw. Pittsburgh lost in the first round for the first time since 2007.

Sean Bergenheim scored the game’s only goal to give the Lightning their only one-goal win of the series and to complete Tampa’s comeback from a 3-1 hole. Roloson is now an incredible 6-0 in playoff elimination games in his career.  The Lightning became the final team to advance to the second round of the NHL playoffs and the only team to win a Game 7 on the road in the first round. They’ll get right back to work on Friday night in Washington as they face the Capitals, the Eastern Conference’s top seed.

Earlier in the night, the Boston Bruins won their home Game 7, downing the Montreal Canadiens in overtime to earn a rematch with the Philadelphia Flyers. With Boston winning, all six division winners have advanced to the second round of the playoffs.

The second round begins Thursday night with the Vancouver Canucks, the top seed in the West, hosting the No. 5 seed Nashville Predators. The San Jose Sharks host the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night, while the Flyers and Bruins get started Saturday afternoon on NBC.
