Linebacker Larry Foote rejoined the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday after spending one long 2-14 season in Detroit. Foote didn’t mince words when he spoke about his time in exile. Apparently, he didn’t much care for all the losing.
“You talk about dog days. Those were dog days, especially being a competitive person and losing. But I made some good relationships and it was good going home playing there. I’m just glad I’m back and thank God I didn’t sign a longer deal there.”
You know an organization sucks when guys are thanking God they didn’t agree to play there for multiple years. Poor Detroit. Will they ever get on the right track?
Hmm. Well, overspending for average free agents like Nate Burleson and Kyle Vanden Bosch, as they did a week ago, isn’t exactly what I would call shrewd investing. They seem to be utilizing the same practices as dunderhead ex-GM Matt Millen.
Winning, stable organizations build through the draft. Teams like the Steelers, Patriots, Colts and Eagles are perennial contenders because they focus on April, not March. If the Lions want to climb out the sewer, they better start hitting on draft weekend.
Whether you like what Foote said, he spoke the truth. Detroit has become a place where star players run from, not to. Needless to say, they’ve got a lot of work to do to alter that reputation.

Just to be clear, Detroit was not willing to sign Larry Foote to a long term extension. With a third rounder in DeAndre Levy who proved himself as a rookie, Foote was expendable.
By the way, Foote is the \star\ that will be a backup in Pittsburgh this season. Detroit fans appreciate what he did by coming here, but he didn’t fit with the team’s future plans.
Yeah, I totally agree there.. He free lanced too much in the 4-3 last season in Detroit. He got a lot of tackles (99), but he blew coverage at times too, and missed lots of tackles as well. He wasn’t as good as Levy by the end of the season Levy looked better than Foote. Have fun being the backup Larry.
