Lakers Still Looking at Trade for Kirk Hinrich

The defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers are arguably the best team in the NBA right now with a 41-13 record and a three game winning streak (without Kobe Bryant) coming into Tuesday night’s matchup with the Golden State Warriors.

With the Lakers current roster and the way they are playing right now even without Kobe Bryant, they have a legitimate shot of repeating as NBA champs, but Phil Jackson and company have serious concerns regarding their point guard position.

Derek Fisher is a Lakers legend and will be on the squad until he decides to retire, whenever that may be, but his numbers are down and his defense isn’t what it used to be. Along with Fisher running the point there is Jordan Farmar coming off the bench, who is a viable backup and can put up good numbers from time to time, but he has a some bad habits on the floor and tends to get out of the Zen Master’s triangle offense which leads many to believe that Farmar won’t be in a Lakers uniform much longer.

Shannon Brown is another point guard on the Lakers roster, but he isn’t a true point and plays much better coming off the bench for Kobe Bryant at the shooting guard position. So the Lakers aren’t considering the high flyer as an option at the point guard position which has made them consider a trade for a point guard with more of a defensive mindset for the second half of the season and another run at an NBA title.

The only player the defending champs seem to be looking at right now is the Chicago Bulls point guard Kirk Hinrich. Despite Hinrich being a player that would definitely improve the Lakers backcourt defensively, the money just isn’t right and a third team will need to be involved if a deal is going to get done before the NBA trade deadline on Thursday.

The deal getting talked about right now is the Lakers getting Kirk Hinrich, the Chicago Bulls getting Adam Morrison and players to be named later (from the Blazers) and the Portland Trailblazers getting Tyrus Thomas and Sasha Vujacic. The problem is that no one really wants to take on Sasha Vujacic and the money he is due over the next two seasons.

Obviously, I don’t think it would take much to tweak this deal, but finding team to take on Sasha’s contract could be the one big problem that could hold up the deal.
