The Los Angeles Lakers dropped a bomb shell on their fans on Wednesday by making it official that they were going in another direction by abandoning Brian Shaw and the triangle offense to hire former Cleveland Cavaliers’ head coach Mike Brown. Even though Brown had some success with the Cavs during his five years in Cleveland by leading them to the NBA Finals in 2007 and winning the NBA’s Coach of the Year award in 2009, Brown was nothing more than a puppet for LeBron James in many people’s eyes and might be the same thing for Kobe Bryant in Lakerland.

Whether or not this was a wise move by this storied NBA franchise remains to be seen, but Mike Brown will definitely have to convince the passionate fans in L.A. that he is the right man to replace arguably the greatest head coach of all-time in Phil Jackson. There is no question that Brown has inherited a very talented Lakers squad led by one of the best players to ever play this game in Kobe Bryant, but it will be no easy task to convince this team that his system works over the triangle.

The only real upside to Mike Brown being the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers next season is that he is a defensive minded coach that will put a lot of emphasis on that end of the floor. With the way the two-time defending NBA champions were just hammered by the Dallas Mavericks in the second round of the playoffs recently, defense is definitely something this team needs to work on in order to get back to a championship caliber squad.

Reportedly, Mike Brown has agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Lakers with a four-year deal worth about $18.25 million dollars. Phil Jackson made this kind of money in just a season and a half, but Mike Brown’s deal is pretty lucrative and impressive for what he has accomplished up to this point in his career.

Needless to say, Brown has some pretty big shoes to fill and will have his work cut out for him next season. His first task will be getting Kobe Bryant to buy into a new system and second will be to determine whether or not to shake up this roster.
