Detroit Red Wings forward Kris Draper is expected to announce his retirement on Tuesday morning after 17 NHL seasons and four Stanley Cup championships. The Detroit Free Press first reported the retirement based on Twitter users spotting a premature photo caption on the team’s website, but then based a second report on an anonymous “person with knowledge of the situation.”
The Red Wings only have one forward spot on their roster available for next season, and that could have come down to Draper and rookie Cory Emmerton. Reportedly Draper wanted to come back for another year, but he “had no interest going to training camp without a contract and ‘trying out’ for a spot” according to the Detroit News.
Still, Draper seems to have a great relationship with the team and is expected to accept a position with the organization like other recently retired Red Wings Chris Osgood, Kirk Maltby and Chris Chelios.
Draper played in 1,157 games in his NHL career, and all but 20 of those with the Red Wings. He also played in 222 playoff games for the Red Wings, the second-most in franchise history. Not bad for a guy the Red Wings acquired from the Winnipeg Jets in 1993 for the hefty sum of $1 (not sure if that was a real American dollar or a Canadian dollar).
