On Monday, Tiger Woods will no longer be No. 1 in the Official World Golf Rankings ending a record string of 281 consecutive weeks at the top. The thirteenth No. 1 in the 24-year history of the rankings will either be an Englishman who has never won a major, or — horror of horrors — a German. It all depends on this weekend’s Andalucia Masters in Spain. If Germany’s Martin Kaymer wins or gets in a two-way tie for second, he’s No. 1. If not, England’s Lee Westwood takes over.
Westwood won’t be playing in Spain, leaving Kaymer a heavy 6/1 favorite to win the tournament. Kaymer has won his last three 72-hole tournaments, although he did find time to lose his Ryder Cup singles match and finish tied for last in the four-man, 36-hole Grand Slam of Golf last week. In that even Kaymer tied his Ryder Cup teammate Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland, who the oddsmakers see as his closest competitor at 14/1 odds. McDowell is currently ranked No. 13 in the world.
Two other members of the European Ryder Cup team are next at 18/1: England’s Ross Fisher (world No. 28) and Italy’s Francesco Molinari (No. 30).
Other top competitors include:
- No. 14 Edoardo Molinari, Italy 25/1
- No. 25 Miguel Angel Jimenez, Spain 25/1
- No. 69 Sergio Garcia, Spain 25/1
- No. 88 Matteo Manassero, Italy 25/1 (the 17-year-old who became the European Tour youngest-ever winner last weekend)
- No. 42 Peter Hanson, Sweden 28/1
- No. 71 Simon Dyson, England 28/1
- No. 87 Gonzalo Fernandez, Spain 28/1
