Jordan, Romo In Same Threesome

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is looking forward to playing with Michael Jordan Friday at the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament.  Ray Allen of the Boston Celtics, who unlike Romo has won more than one playoff game, will round out the threesome.  Organizers call the threesome the “most recognizable” in the tourney’s 21-year history.

Romo, who recently quit US Open qualifying, thinks he knows what to expect playing with Jordan. “Mike will give it to me and I’ll give it right back to him,” said Romo.

While Romo is probably a better golfer than he is a quarterback, no active athlete has won the ACC since Washington Redskins quarterback Mark Rypien won the inaugural tournament in 1990.  A year later, Rypien was MVP of Super Bowl XXVI.  Jordan’s best finish at the ACC also came in that first 1990 tourney, when he finished tied for ninth.  Romo’s best finish here was third two years ago, and he’s a 5/2 favorite to win this year.

Other notable threesomes include:

  • past and present quarterbacks Troy Aikman, John Elway and Aaron Rodgers
  • retired pitchers John Smoltz, Greg Maddux and Bret Saberhagen
  • retired Super Bowl winners Jerry Rice, Marshall Faulk and Sterling Sharpe
