Editor’s note: Calm down, this headline was in no way meant to be racially insensitive.
Johnny Damon, quite possibly the most eligible free agent on the market at this point, sent a text message to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution expressing interest in joining the Braves. Now, the team has offered him a one-year deal.
No amount has been reported, but it’s safe to say it might not be the $13 million he made last year in the Big Apple.
The former New York Yankees outfielder has also seen interest from the Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays, but neither of those teams can really afford him, due to their limited payroll flexibility this late in the offseason.
Damon batted .282 with 24 home runs and 82 RBIs last season, scoring 107 runs for the World Champions. Wherever he ends up, I hope he goes all Grizzly Adams Caveman again.
In National League news, the San Francisco Giants gave free agent Todd Wellemeyer a minor league deal Wednesday. A year after winning 13 games for the St. Louis Cardinals, the 31-year-old righty missed time with an elbow injury in 2009, going 7-10 with a crappy 5.89 ERA over 21 starts and seven relief appearances.
This season, he should get an opportunity to compete for the fifth rotation spot. If he is added to the Giants’ 40-man roster, he’d earn a $1 million, one-year contract with a shot at another $500,000 in performance bonuses.

I can’t believe it’s taken this long for him to find a home – he’s no doubt a good starting outfielder.
