After it appeared time and options were quickly running out, former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole agreed to terms on a four-year contract with Liverpool for an estimated 90,000 pounds a week. The transfer was free so it cost Liverpool nothing to get him and it should all go through smoothly as long as Cole passes his medical. The signing was announced on July 19.

The 28-year-old England player was reportedly also thinking about moves to Arsenal and Tottenham so he could remain in London. However, it’s believed he was asking for a weekly wage of about 120,000 pounds. His wage demands are believed to be the reason Chelsea let him go this summer.

Cole isn’t a bad signing by new manager Roy Hodgson as he tries to rebuild the shambles that former manager Rafael Benitez left him with. It also gives Liverpool more depth and they often need it as injury-prone striker Fernando Torres is usually out of the lineup with some type of physical problem.

It’s also been rumoured that Torres, Javier Mascherano, and captain Steven Gerrard might be considering leaving the sinking ship sometime soon, so signing Cole will give them a little bit of cover if they happen to take off. If they all stay, the club should easily improve on last year’s seventh place finish. Actually they should be greatly improved in any case since they got rid of Benitez. However, Liverpool did lose another good player this summer when Yossi Benayoun headed over to Chelsea.

Liverpool also added Serbian forward Milan Jovanovic in the off-season after he joined the club when his contract expired at Belgian team Standard Liege, but Hodgson still has some work to do as left-back Fabio Aurelio also left and it looks like Emiliano Insua will soon follow on his way to Fiorentina in Italy.

When he’s been healthy, Cole has played pretty well for Chelsea as he won three Premier League crowns and FA Cups with them during his seven-year spell. He started his career with West Ham and has scored 10 goals in 56 games for England.

Cole said he loved playing at Chelsea and loved the fans, but it was time to move on.
