Whenever a veteran player in any professional sport in the US or even overseas starts to either show a decline in their skills or age just starts to get the better of them, their appeal to teams really starts to go out the window and that is exactly to two-time NBA All-Star Jerry Stackhouse as he is headed towards the end of his career in the NBA.
Last season Jerry Stackhouse had his worst season statistically in the NBA ever since being drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers with the third overall pick back in 1995. When Stackhouse came out of North Carolina he was one of the hottest young players in the league with a flair for scoring, like many other Tar Heels have coming from North Carolina to the pros.
Despite being somewhat of a scoring machine in his 14 years in the league, Stackhouse has bounced around the NBA quite a bit in his time as he hasn’t been with a team for more than five years in his entire career.
Even though Stackhouse burst onto the NBA scene in Philly with the Sixers, he only stayed two seasons with the Philadelphia before heading to Detroit to play alongside arguably one of the best players in the NBA at the time in Grant Hill. After the 2001-2002 season with the Pistons, it was on to the Washington Wizards for Stack, but like Philly, it was another short stay as he then moved onto his most recent team in the Dallas Mavericks where he became more of a role player than the leading scorer like he was used to taking a backseat to up and coming forward Dirk Nowitzki.
Despite taking a more secondary role in Dallas, it seemed to suit Stackhouse more than most people anticipated and he was able to stay with the Mavericks all the way up until last season where he only played ten games due to injury.
As of a result of Stackhouse’s injury problems and the fact that he wasn’t getting any younger, the Mavs decided to trade him to the Memphis Grizzlies who then just bought out the remainder of his contract and made him a free agent to go where he pleased.
Unfortunately, there wasn’t much a market for an aging veteran with knee problems and Stackhouse has been unemployed ever since.
Even though has been labeled as somewhat injury prone, Stackhouse has been continued to say that he is healthy and ready to play. After the Milwaukee Bucks saw their sharp shooter Michael Redd go down against the Los Angeles Lakers recently, they have contacted Stackhouse and are expected to sign him as soon as Monday.
