Jerome Boateng not the first footballer to suffer freak injury

Manchester City defender Jerome Boateng  is still sidelined by another in a long list of freak injuries to football players. It appears the German international tore a left knee tendon while playing with Germany against Denmark recently and then aggravated it after being hit in the leg by a drink cart on a flight back to Manchester, which as further delayed his debut in the EPL. City has said it might be about a month until he can suit up for the club after the collision made his injury worse.

It’s believed Boateng won’t even begin training until early October. The 22-year old was bought by City for about U.S. $19 million dollar from Hamburg the World Cup this summer. But he’ll now miss the start of the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

Boateng isn’t the first football player to suffer a strange injury though as the following list will attest to. It seems goal keepers have the worst luck when it comes to hurting themselves.

English defender Rio Ferdinand of Manchester United once strained a tendon just by resting his leg upon a coffee table for several hours back in 2001.

Aberdeen keeper Jamie Langfield dropped a pot of boiling water on his foot when making coffee and missed a few weeks.

Glasgow Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot once had an egg blow up in his face and needed hospital treatment for burns after he was checking on his microwaved food. The egg blew up scalded him with hot water.

Former Everton keeper Richard Wright missed a FA Cup replay at Chelsea after ignoring a sign warning players not to practice in the goalmouth. He fell over the sign and twisted his ankle.

Former Wimbledon keeper Dave Beasant missed two months of the season in 1993 after dropping a bottle of salad dressing on his foot, which promptly severed a tendon in his big toe.

Stoke midfielder Liam Lawrence once fell over his dog and went tumbling down a flight of stairs.
