ESPN has decided to go with a two-man booth for Monday Night Football next season by taking analyst and former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski off the broadcast and using him on other NFL programming on the network. Left calling games will be Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden, who’ve teamed with Jaws the past three seasons, and Jaws doesn’t sound too disappointed about the decision.
“They pretty much said they’re going with a two-man booth but wanted to talk to me about opportunities,” said Jaworski of how he got word from ESPN execs. Jaws signed a five-year contract extension with ESPN to work on other NFL-related programming.
“Jaws served us well,” ESPN’s executive vice president for programming said. “But when we looked at everything we have, it became apparent that expanding his role on the other stuff to let him focus on all the teams, not just one game, was a better use of him.”
As for his relationship with his former broadcast partners, Jaws couldn’t have been much nicer. “We get along spectacularly,” said Jaws. “I love Jon like a brother. And Mike has been a mentor.”
Gruden joined Monday Night Football in 2009 after retiring from coaching at 45, just a few years older than John Madden was when he retired from coaching to become perhaps the greatest color commentator in NFL history. Jaws thinks that Gruden, like Madden, may never return to the sidelines. Jaws says Gruden has “turned down [coaching] offers,” adding “it wouldn’t surprise me if he made TV his career, maybe for his health and sanity.”
