Jackson, Diamondbacks Reach Deal

Avoiding arbitration this weekend, Edwin Jackson and the Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed on a $13.35 million, two-year deal.

The right-hander went 13-9 with a 3.62 ERA over 33 starts with the Detroit Tigers last season, enjoying his first All-Star selection. He was traded away in a three-team, hot stove deal back in December that also involved Curtis Granderson becoming the new center fielder for New York Yankees.

Jackson will make $4.2 million this season including an $800,000 signing bonus before he earns $8.5 million in 2011. The 26-year-old is a career 38-39 with a 4.66 ERA over 139 games in seven big league seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Tampa Bay Rays and Detroit.

Speaking of arbitration, Cody Ross and the  Florida Marlins had their hearing Monday, with the Marlins offering not a penny more than $4.2 million to the outfielder’s $4.45 million suggestion. Ross batted .290 with 24 home runs and 90 RBIs last season, when he made $2.3 million. The sides are expected to hear back from arbitrators sometime Tuesday. I’ll take the Fish in this bet.

So far, players and owners are 50/50, with outfielder Corey Hart beating $4.8 million out of the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay letting go of just $3 million to outfielder B.J. Upton, who would’ve rather made $300,000 more.

With six more players scheduled for hearings this week, we’ll keep you posted.
