When Charlie Weis took over as head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish a few years ago after having a lot of success with Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots, Notre Dame started to get a lot of hype and hope for getting back on top as one of the best college football teams in the country.
Things looked good in South Bend as the Fighting Irish had a promising young quarterback in Brady Quinn and a head coach who already had a lot of success on the pro level on the New England Patriots coaching staff. With the thought to be promising future ahead for the Fighting Irish, Notre Dame was getting a lot of media attention and therefore a lot more pressure to win big football games. The first couple of seasons in the Charlie Weis era the Fighting Irish lived up to expectations as Notre Dame quickly became one of the best college football teams in the country, but the success didn’t last long after quarterback BradyQuinn made the jump to the NFL and was drafted by the Cleveland Browns.Charlie Weis and company really started to struggle as they tried to replace Quinn behind center. Fortunately, this season things started to turn around for Notre Dame as quarerback Jimmy Clausen was starting to come into his own as the Fighting Irish starting quarterback and they team seemed headed for either the BCS championship game or a big BCS bowl.
Even though Clausen kept playing at a high level and has been getting Heisman trophy consideration, the Fighting Irish just started to free fall and lost three straight games against Navy, Pittsburgh and just recently to the UConn Huskies.
Earlier in the year Notre Dame also lost games to Michigan and USC, but they were still in the running for a BCS bowl until they lost these three games in a row. Sitting at 6-5 with one game left in the season against the Stanford Cardinals, the Fighting Irish have suffered yet another disappointing season under head coach Charlie Weis who’s job security has continued to be in question.
Many people believe Notre Dame have already made a decision on Weis’ future with the team, but an official statement on whether they will honor Weis’ contract through 2015 or fired the head coach has not been announced.
Personally, I believe Charlie Weis getting fired is inevitable and they will announce his firing within the next week or so. With Jimmy Clausen being predicted to be the number one pick in this year’s NFL draft, the Irish will be starting all over again next season and I doubt they will want to continue with a head coach that has yet to show some results that justify his big contract.
