Introducing Kevin Ford, Dunker Supreme

Over at my other site, I’ve introduced a little meme about the best dunkers in college basketball play for small schools. It all started with a preseason post over at Storming the Floor, and now that the 2010 season is progressing nicely, small school dunkers are all over the place.

Names like Aaron Thompson (Cal State Fullerton), Tavaris Washington (Arkansas Pine Bluff), Chris Wright (Dayton) and Paul George (Fresno State) have almost become common. However, there’s another small-school dunker I’ve come across that deserves some attention: Kevin Ford of Oral Roberts University. According to his bio, Ford began his career at New Mexico State before transferring to ORU. He’s currently a junior who averages 12 points, 8 boards while shooting 54% from the field.

When you see these following dunks, it’s easy to see why Ford shoots the ball so well. If I had to guess, I’d say most, if not all of Ford’s points come in the painted area and of the following variety:

And:

That second dunk is particularly nasty, if, for nothing else, because of how high the pass off the backboard was, and subsequently, how high Ford had to jump to throw it down. While it’s doubtful many of these players will have extended NBA careers, it doesn’t mean they won’t be able to play for pay somewhere. They are too athletically gifted not to.
