On Monday night, the Chicago Blackhawks got a crucial two points to stay ahead of the pack in the race for the Western Conference’s final playoff spot with a 3-2 overtime win on the road against their arch rivals, the Detroit Red Wings. The Blackhawks never trailed in the game, and Chicago’s Marian Hossa’s power play goal with less than a minute into OT was the game-winner.
Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford made 33 saves to earn the victory, while Detroit’s Joey MacDonald made 38 saves in a losing effort. “I had so many shots tonight, and their goalie played extremely well,” said Hossa, now in his second season with the Blackhawks. “I was hoping to find that one shot, and thank God that it was the last one.”
Jonathan Toews got Chicago its first lead less than three minutes into the game. A few minutes later, Detroit’s Nicklas Lidstrom tied the game and made some history by becoming the first NHL defenseman over 40 to score 60 points in a season.
Brent Seabrook scored on a first period power play to put the Blackhawks up 2-1. Detroit’s Henrik Zetterberg tied the game again with a power play goal in the opening minutes of the third, but Zetterberrg also took the penalty in the closing seconds of regulation that led to Hossa’s game-winner in overtime.
The Blackhawks are in eighth place in the Western Conference, and now have a three-point lead over the ninth-place Calgary Flames for the final playoff spot.
