Hiller Gets Second Straight Shutout; Ducks Down Sharks 1-0

Anaheim Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller almost singlehandedly beat the San Jose Sharks on Sunday night to record his second straight shutout. On Friday, Hiller stopped 27 shots in a 6-0 Ducks win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, then with a much slimmer margin of error on Sunday, stopped all 37 Sharks shots in a 1-0 Anaheim win.

It’s the fourth time in Anaheim franchise history that a goalie has recorded consecutive shutouts, and the first time since December 2002 when J.S. Giguere put together three straight shutouts. The 2002 season ended with the Ducks missed the playoffs for the third straight year. Hiller now has fourth shutouts on the season and ten in his four-year NHL career.

Bobby Ryan beat San Jose’s Antti Niemi in the second period for the game’s only goal. Ryan has four goals in his last five games since moving from right wing to center after a puck broke several bones in Ryan Getzlaf’s face.

While the Ducks have won five of six, the Sharks dropped their fourth straight. San Jose’s offense has disappeared over the past three games — the Sharks have only scored one goal over that span. Anaheim (22-18-4) moved one point ahead of the Sharks and into sixth place in the Western Conference, but the Sharks (21-16-5) have played two fewer games and are one of five Western Conference teams with 47 points.
