Swiss goaltender Jonas Hiller got his first shutout of the season and 7th of his NHL career on Monday night as the Anaheim Ducks beat the Los Angeles Kings 2-0. Ducks rookie defenseman Cam Fowler, the 12th overall pick in the 2010 NHL draft who will turn 19 next week, opened the scoring with a second-period power play goal. Jason Blake then made it 2-0 with 2:24 left in the game.
Hiller stopped 27 shots to get the shutout. He’s been solid this season with a 7-4-1 record and 2.69 goals against average and .912 saves percentage. Hiller got plenty of help from his teammates, who sacrificed their bodies to block shots all night. “That’s the type of game our club has to play night in and out,” said Ducks Coach Randy Carlyle. “We won a big game and got great efforts from the whole group. The true display was at the end of the game, when people were sacrificing bodies to block shots and protect the shutout for Jonas Hiller.”
Meanwhile Fowler was drawing plenty of praise from veteran Ducks star Teemu Selanne. “This Fowler kid, he’s going to win the Norris Trophy [given to the NHL’s best defenseman] one day,” Selanne said. “He has all the tools. It’s amazing to watch an 18-year-old kid dominate this game. It’s unbelievable.”
Thanks to a Ducks penalty with 1:12 left and a pulled goalie, the Kings had an extended 6-on-4 put still couldn’t solve Hiller. The Kings have now dropped seven of their last eight games after starting the season 12-3-0. The win moved Anaheim (12-11-3) from last to third in the Pacific Division, while the Kings (13-10-0) dropped to last place. Only three points separate last from first though in the crowded Pacific Division, and the Ducks have played three more games than the other four teams in the division.
