And you think soccer’s boring? A recent high school basketball game in America ended 2-0 when Bibb County beat Brookwood in a thriller in the state of Alabama. What made the snooze fest even worse for the fans was the fact that the game’s one and only basket was scored after just 15 seconds of high-octane action. According to the American National Federation of State High School Associations, this was the lowest-scoring contest since 1977. However, it’s hard to believe there was another 2-0 game in high school history, but the records say that Durham Hillside of North Carolina beat Roxboro Person 2-0 back in 1977.

Both squads might have been a little tired since it was their fourth game of the week, but kids at that age should certainly have a lot more energy than that. Brookwood’s head coach Thad Fitzpatrick spoke to the local press and said his team’s game plan was to try and slow down the offence of Bibb County. He stated, “We decided, ‘OK, let’s just hold the ball and see what happens. They never came out of the zone. We got a chance to rest, and we thought they might chase us a little bit, so we just held the ball.”

Brookwood basically held the ball whenever they had it, but did attempt a couple of shots, which of course missed the basket. In the second half, Bibb County started doing the same thing, which was just to hold onto the ball for as long as possible. Things really got dramatic in the last 15 seconds of the game when Brookwood turned the ball over just before they were going to attempt the game-tying shot. In total, the two teams combined for just seven attempts at the basket during the game. Nobody could have predicted the outcome of the game especially since the two schools met earlier in the season with Brookwood winning the outing 40-36 back in November.

Brandon Rutledge of Bibb County was the hero of this game with the only basket and his school now has a record of 22-9 on the season. The only games in Alabama that have finished with a lower recorded score of 1-0 have been games that were won by forfeit. There have also been no games in the state in which both teams had a single-digit score. The highest-scoring game in Alabama history came back in 1991/92 when South Lamar beat Lamar County 151-119.
