Another NBA head coach has been given his walking papers as the Cleveland Cavaliers announced on May 12 that Mike Brown has been released by the club.

Brown led the team to a record of 33-49 in the just-finished 2013/14 regular season. It was his first year back with the club after also serving as their head coach between 2005 and 2010.

His first stint in Cleveland was much more successful as he led the team to the NBA Finals in the 2006/07 season. However, let’s not forget he had some help from all-star player LeBron James back then. Brown was sacked as the Cavaliers coach the first time following the 2009/10 basketball campaign and just before James left the team for the Miami Heat as a free agent.

Even though Cleveland play in the weak Eastern Conference the club failed to make the playoffs this year under Brown, especially with all-star point guard Kyrie Irving in the lineup. Team management was also disappointed that Brown’s team didn’t play a high tempo offensive style of game. It will cost them to get rid of brown though since he was signed to a four-year deal last year and he had three years to go on it.

After Brown left Cleveland in 2010 he wound up as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers for just over a season. He was then sacked after five games in the 2012/13 campaign. The Cavaliers are now looking for their third head coach in the space of about a year. Dan Gilbert, the team’s owner said it’s a tough business and it was a difficult decision to let Brown go, but the franchise needs too head in a new direction if it’s going to be successful in the near future.

Gilbert also announced that David Griffin will be promoted to the fulltime general manager’s position and will be responsible for finding a new head coach to replace Brown.
