This weekend features two more great golf tournaments: the Farmer’s Insurance Open, where Tiger Woods will be making his 2011 debut, and the Volvo Golf Champions, the first-ever European Tour event in Bahrain. Last week, we went a respectable 7-3-1 in our head-to-head picks to improve to 16-6-4 on the year. This week, we’ll try to do even better with eleven more marvelous matchups:
2011 Farmers Insurance Open Tournament Head to Head Odds & Picks
Tiger Woods, USA (World Ranking: 3) -250 vs. Phil Mickelson, USA (6) +180
Tiger’s coming off an eight-week layoff since losing in a playoff to Graeme McDowell at the Chevron World Challenge — Tiger’s best result in over a year. Mickelson played last week in Abu Dhabi and wasn’t impressive with a T37 finish. Both have won a lot at this tournament, but Tiger more recently in 2008.
Our Pick: TIGER.
Phil Mickelson, USA (6) -120 vs. Dustin Johnson, USA (16) -110
Johnson finished T9 in his last event, three weeks ago at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.
Our Pick: JOHNSON.
Nick Watney, USA (37) -115 vs. Rickie Fowler, USA (31) -115
Both these young stars are coming off long breaks. Watney last played eight weeks ago, finishing thirteenth at the Chevron; Fowler’s been off even longer, finishing T3 in Orlando in his last event 11 weeks ago.
Our Pick: WATNEY.
Bill Haas, USA (50) -120 vs. Ben Crane, USA (37) -110
Haas lost in a three-way playoff last week at the Bob Hope Classic. Crane hasn’t played since the Tournament of Champions three weeks ago, where he finished T21.
Our Pick: CRANE.
Hunter Mahan, USA (21) -115 vs. Justin Rose, England (29) -115
Mahan has played more recently, finishing T25 at the Tournament of Champions three weeks ago. Rose has been off for eight weeks since finishing T5 at a Japan Tour event.
Our Pick: ROSE.
Anthony Kim, USA (32) -115 vs. Ryuji Imada, Japan (195) -115
Kim played pretty well in Hawaii, finishing T13 at the Sony Open two weeks ago. Imada finished T33 last week at the Bob Hope.
Our Pick: KIM.
2011 Volvo Golf Champions Head to Head Odds & Picks
Robert Karlsson, Sweden (17) -115 vs. Francesco Molinari, Italy (15) -115
Karlsson last played nine weeks ago when he won the Dubai World Championship. Molinari played last week at Abu Dhabi, finishing T8.
Our Pick: MOLINARI.
Ian Poulter, England (12) -110 vs. Padraig Harrington, Ireland (28) -120
Both golfers had a bad week last week at Abu Dhabi: Poulter missed the cut and Harrington was disqualified.
Our Pick: POULTER.
Miguel A. Jimenez, Spain (24) -115 vs. Matteo Manassero, Italy (60) -115
Jiminez tied for 11th last week at Abu Dhabbi, while teenager Manassero finished T37.
Our Pick: MANASSERO
Peter Hanson, Sweden (37) -115 vs. Seung -Yul Noh, Korea (64) -115
Last week at Abu Dhabi, Hanson missed the cut while Noh finished T18.
Our Pick: HANSON.
Sergio Garcia, Spain (80) -110 vs. Anders Hansen, Denmark (68) -120
Garcia has been off for nine weeks since finishing T21 at the Dubai World Championship. Hansen finished T18 last week at Abu Dhabi.
