Gilbert Arenas pleaded guilty Friday to a felony gun charge Friday, stemming from a Dec. 19 dispute over a card game on a team flight, leaving not only his career, but his freedom to question.
The Washington Wizards star will be sentenced March 26, and likely won’t get more than six months. However, a judge could give Arenas probation, or (if he’s a real stickler) the charge’s maximum term of five years, even though guidelines ask for six to 12 months.
Arenas mumbled nothing but “Yes, your honor” and “No sir” throughout the hearing, looking not so Agent Zero-ish.
“He said to me he messed up and he needs to be responsible,” coach Flip Saunders said pregame against the Bulls Friday night. “He needs to accept his actions.”
Though Javaris Crittenton is rumored to be the other player involved in the plane incident, Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Kavanaugh refused to specify. Apparently, “the other player” offered to settle matters with a fist fight, but Arenas said he was too old for that and would rather burn the other player’s car or shoot him in the face. The teammate replied he would shoot Arenas in the knee, which wasn’t very nice considering Gil has missed most of the past two seasons due to a few knee operations.
Those are some harsh words on Arenas’ part, especially for someone who is making $111 million over six years. To play basketball. The Wizards are trying to move on without him, as they’ve done much of the past couple seasons.
