Monday night in Atlanta, the San Francisco Giants hung on for a 3-2 victory over the Braves in Game 4 to win their National League Division Series three games to one. The loss sent longtime Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox into retirement. Braves fans chanted “Bobby! Bobby!” briefly after Giants closer Brian Wilson got former Yankee Melky “White Substance” Cabrera to ground out to end the game.

The one area the Giants were clearly better than the Braves in this series was starting pitching. In Game 4, 21-year-old rookie starter Madison Bumgarner earned the win for the Giants, allowing two runs, six hits and one walk while striking out five over six innings. The Giants also managed to be slightly better than the Braves offensively and defensively, as every game in the series was decided by one run and won by the team that made fewer errors.

For the Giants, it’s their first postseason series win since beating the Cardinals in five games in the 2002 NLCS. The Giants will start this year’s NLCS on Saturday in Philadelphia, facing the two-time defending National League champion Phillies.

Retiring Cox did a pretty admirable job getting the Braves to the playoffs for the 15th time in his 20 seasons as Braves manager, and for the first time since 2005. But it was also the fifth-straight first-round series Cox’s Braves lost, and their eighth losing effort in their past nine series.
