I get that perfect games are special — only 20 ever, even if two already this season. So last night Detroit’s Armando Galarraga retired the first 26 Cleveland batters, then got the 27th to ground out and everyone thinks Galarraga covered first in time to make it perfect game #21 and that the umpire should be castrated. The first time I saw the replay it looked like Galarraga might’ve bobbled the ball at the bag, but whatever. The Tigers were winning 3-0, Galarraga stayed calm and got the very next batter out and has to settle for a one-hitter. Life’s not fair.
Umpire Jim Joyce, who blew the call, apologized profusely to anyone who would listen after the game — but really who cares? It’s a technicality. You want to consider it a perfect game — go for it. But can we stop with the oh, posterity and history will be wrong and say it wasn’t a perfect game. This just in — history and posterity have been wrong before, and about much more important things than whether Galarraga got 28 or 27 outs in a row.
The hubbub over the call overshadowed the retirement earlier in the day of Ken Griffey, Jr. Griffey goes out at 5th on the all-time home run list, but it’s very surprising to me that his championship-less, injury-riddled career has never aroused steroid suspicions.
