Tiger Woods isn’t the only golfer who’ll be missing the British Open next week because of a leg injury. France’s Thomas Levet won the French Open last week (Tiger hasn’t won a golf tournament anywhere since late 2009), then celebrated by jumping into a lake. But Levet’s victory plunge has come with a steep price — he fractured his shin in the process and now he’ll have to sit out the British Open.

“I am extremely disappointed to miss out on the Open Championship, but my specialist has advised me to have an operation on the fracture tomorrow morning,” said Levet.”I will have screws and a plate inserted which will ensure that my shin recovers completely. I will be off for six weeks, which is very bad timing with so many important tournaments coming up. However, the wonderful memory of winning my national Open will definitely keep me going through my recovery!

Levet, 42, came awfully close to winning the British Open in 2003, eventually losing a five-hole playoff to Ernie Els.  He was the first French golfer in six years to win the French Open, and only the third to do it since 1972.

American Robert Garrigus will take Levet’s place at the British Open.  Levet also dropped a Terminator reference as he tweeted his disheartening news: “Sad I have to miss the Open, doctors told me operation +4 to 6 weeks off ..see you soon!!! I’ll be back!!! (I sound like Arnold!!)
