Free Agency Day One Recap

So much for 2010 NFL free agency being quiet. Once midnight struck last night, the deals and rumors began to swirl like one of those tornadoes in the movie Twister. So, who went where and for how much? Let’s take a look, shall we.

The Bears are players – A six-year, $72 million contract for Julius Peppers and 4-years, $12.5 million for running back Chester Taylor. They overpaid for both, but they need the help. Thus far, they are the Redskins of of this free agency.

The Lions like losing – $25 million over five years for number three, and oft injured, wide receiver Nate Burleson? Uh, okay. Then they turned around and inked overrated pass rusher Kyle Vanden Bosch to a four-year deal. Good luck with that.

Jets add another whiny corner – The Chargers unloaded problem child cornerback Antonio Cromartie on the Jets, who just yesterday unloaded another problem child, Lito Sheppard. I’m sure Cromartie will be on his best behavior in the Big Apple, where there aren’t any temptations.

All quiet on the Redskins front – It’s just not the offseason without the ‘Skins reaching for some guy who will end up getting cut in two years. Damn you Dan Snyder for hiring smart football men like Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan! You’ve ruined it for the rest of us.

South Florida bound? – Looks like my favorite free agent, Karlos Dansby, is headed to the Dolphins. Seems like a good fit. He should thrive in their 3-4 scheme.

Jake jettisoned – Finally, the Panthers wised up and kicked Jake Delhomme to the curb. I actually like Delhomme, but the dude never recovered from the arm difficulties he suffered a couple years ago. He’d make a nice backup to Matt Ryan in Atlanta.

A Giant Rolle – The G-Men set their sights on safety Antrel Rolle early and hope to land him. I think Rolle is slightly over-hyped, but the Giants secondary is deplorable, so I’d call this a smart move, if they can get him.

The Marshall plan – The Seahawks are on the verge of acquiring petulant wideout Brandon Marshall from Denver. Wow. The Broncos really do like trading superstars. I wonder if Josh McDaniels understands it takes talent, not black magic voodoo, to win in the NFL.

That’s just some of the action that took place within the first 24 hours. Plenty more to come.
