Although there are just 20 teams in the English Premier League at a time, Manchester City player Frank Lampard has now scored against 39 different clubs, which sets a new record. The 36-year-old English midfielder, who recently retired from international football, scored against his former side Chelsea to set the record on September 21.
Lampard came on as a late substitute and leveled the score against his former team in a 1-1 home draw at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester. The previous record of scoring against 38 different teams was held by former English international striker Andy Cole, who played for several teams including Manchester United and Newcastle United.
Lampard now has 172 goals in the Premier League with the majority of them coming for Chelsea, where he spent 13 years and won three league titles, the European Champions League, the Europa Cup, and four FA Cups. He is Chelsea’s all-time leading scorer with 211 goals in all competitions. Lampard wasn’t offered a new contract as Stamford Bridge after the 2013/14 season and he signed a deal with New York City FC of North America’s Major League Soccer (MLS).
However, New York City is an expansion franchise and doesn’t start playing until the 2015 season. This enabled Lampard to sign with Man City on a six-month loan deal until next January. The Ney York franchise is owned by Man City and the New York Yankees baseball club.
The following is a list of all the Premier League teams that Lampard has managed to score against: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Barnsley, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool, Bolton, Bradford, Charlton, Chelsea, Coventry City, Crystal Palace, Derby County, Everton, Fulham, Hull City, Leeds United, Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Middlesbrough. Newcastle United, Norwich City, Nottingham Forest, Portsmouth, Reading, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton, Stoke City, Sunderland, Swansea City, Tottenham, West Brom, West Ham, Wigan, Wimbledon, and Wolves.
He could add two more teams to the list if he manages to score against Queens Park Rangers and Burnley before leaving for New York. There has been a total of 46 different teams in the Premier League since its inception and Lampard has failed to score against just seven of them during his career. He started his pro career in his hometown of London with West Ham United and played nine games on loan with Swansea before joining Chelsea in 2001.
Lampard needs just three more league goals to reach 175, which would bring him level with Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and former Arsenal star Thierry Henry, who are tied for third on the all-time Premier League scoring list. Lampard has 252 goals in 846 career club games and added 29 more in 106 games for England as well as nine in 19 appearances with the English Under-21 side.
