In his first full season with the Philadelphia Flyers, left winger Dan Carcillo led the team in penalty minutes, so he naturally felt he deserved more than the mandatory 5% raise required by the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement. To avoid arbitration, the Flyers and Carcillo agreed to a one-year $1.075 million contract — which is closer to a 15% raise for the 25-year-old goon.
The deal puts the Flyers nearly $2.5 million over the salary cap, so they’ll need to make more moves to cut salary before the season begins.
Carcillo’s 207 regular season penalty minutes ranked fourth in the league, but he only averaged 2 penalty minutes per game in 17 playoff appearances. He also had six points in the postseason, none bigger than a Game 3 overtime game-winning goal against the Devils in the first round:
Carcillo was also part of the first fight in the history of the NHL’s Winter Classic:
Perhaps the lowlight of Carcillo’s year was getting left out of four of six Stanley Cup Finals games as a healthy scratch. Carcillo says that still smarts some, but he’s trying his best to move on:
TweetObviously, the Stanley Cup Finals, you play all year to get there and then you’re not in, you’re not going to be happy about it. But that was last year, and I’m looking forward to this year. … I’m happy to be back and be a Philadelphia Flyer for another year.
