The Philadelphia Flyers have seen their lead in the Eastern Conference shrinking the last few weeks, but they took a big step towards clinching the No. 1 seed in the East with a 5-2 road win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night. The Penguins had leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but the Flyers scored four unanswered goals to move four points ahead of Pittsburgh in the standings.

Ville Leino assisted on Scott Hartnell’s power play goal that tied the game 2-2 in the second period, then Leino scored twice in the third period to put the game out of reach. Despite the two early leads, the Penguins managed just 13 shots through the first two periods.

Leino, who now has 19 goals this season, admitted the Flyers were coasting a bit with their big lead in the conference standings. “It’s sometimes tough when teams aren’t that close to you,” he said. “It’s not always easy to get ready for games. And now teams are close to us, and this was a desperate game, and we played good. We got excited, and it was like a little bit of a playoff game for us, and probably for them, too, so it was a lot of fun.”

The Flyers have six games remaining and need just seven points to clinch the No. 1 seed, and six points to clinch the Atlantic Division. Besides playoff positioning, the Flyers have also won all three games they played in Pittsburgh this season. The Penguins are still in fourth place in the East, five points ahead of Tampa Bay, so the Penguins will likely have home-ice in the first round of the playoffs.
