The Philadelphia Flyers switched goaltenders for Game 3 of their first round series with the Buffalo Sabres, and Brian Boucher was a difference maker in his first start of the postseason. After Sergei Bobrovsky struggled in net the first two games, Boucher stopped 35 of 37 shots to lead the Flyers to a 4-2 win in Buffalo and their first lead of the series at two games to one.

Nik Zherdev scored the biggest goal for the Flyers, giving them a 3-1 lead with 3:16 remaining in the third period. Besides Boucher, the other big key was the Philadelphia penalty kill. With just over 13 minutes remaining and the lead cut to one, the Sabres had a 5-on-3 for 1:15 and managed only one shot on net.

In the other net, Ryan Miller made only 22 saves to take the loss. Rookie goalie Sergei Bobrovsky started the first two games for Philadelphia, was pulled in favor of Boucher in Game 2, which the Flyers eventually won 5-4. For Game 3, Bobrovsky was scratched and last year’s playoff hero Michael Leighton dressed as Boucher’s backup.

“I think it was definitely a good move,” said Philadelphia defenseman Sean O’Donnell. “Boosh made a couple of nice plays, big saves … he seems to have a calming effect out there.”
