Undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. is known as the world’s highest-paid athlete and he wants to share the wealth. Well, not exactly, but he wants to help out mixed martial arts fighters since he feel’s they’re being treated unfairly by promoters and organizations such as the UFC. Therefore Mayweather wants to promote MMA events to make sure the participants are properly paid.
While Mayweather can command between $30 million and $40 million per fight, the highest-paid MMA fighters earn nowhere near that, even though UFC fights usually set pay-per-view records and sell out stadiums. According to Forbes, Georges St. Pierre of Quebec, Canada was the highest-paid MMA fighter in 2013 when he took home $12 million for the entire year. However, in 2014, each of the top-10 mixed martial artists have been paid less than $1 million.
In fact, according to some reports, the average UFC fighter makes somewhere between $12,000 and $20,000 per year. This is quite low since the UFC rakes in millions of dollars on each show and typically brags about selling more pay-per-views than big boxing bouts, even Mayweather’s. This leads many people, Mayweather included, to believe they’re ripping off the fighters
Mayweather told the press that he intends to change that trend by promoting MMA bouts via his Mayweather Promotions Company. The 37-year-old, who has a record of 47-0 with 26 Kos in the ring, said he’s looking forward to promoting his first show. He said his company isn’t just one dimensional and he likes to think outside of the box. He added that he wants MMA fighters to make more money because it’s not fair what they’re being paid now. “I’m here to treat fighters fair,” he stated. “I’m here to treat MMA fighters fair, and I feel that the talent should win.”
Mayweather’s promotion company received a promoter’s license back in July from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The boxer is now winding down his career and plans on retiring from the squared circle within the next year or two and will then concentrate on promoting events. Mayweather is a five-division world champion who has won 10 different world championship belts during his controversial career.
