Undefeated WBC and WBA Welterweight Champion Floyd Mayweather met Marcos Maidana of Argentina in a much-anticipated rematch on Saturday, September 13 in Las Vegas. While their first bout last May was pretty competitive with Maidana raking the champion with head and body shots much of the night, the rematch was a bit of a dud. Maidana’s effort in the first fight wasn’t enough to win it as he dropped a majority decision, but it was exciting enough to earn a rematch with the champ.
The second scrap was a letdown though as the only part of it being an alleged biting incident. This took place during a clinch in the eighth round when Maidana’s head was apparently being held by Mayweather’s glove. The champion then suddenly reeled backward and pulled his glove away and showed it to referee Kenny Bayless. The ref then sent both boxers to neutral corners and took a good look at Mayweather’s glove, Bayless then made his way over to Maidana and gave him a bit of a lecture.
The fight carried on, but when it was over Mayweather announced during his in-the-ring interview that Maidana had bit his left hand through his glove and gnawed down on three of his fingers. He claimed that his hand then went numb and that’s why he didn’t throw the left very often for the remainder of the fight. He mentioned this several times during the interview. When it was Maidana’s turn to be questioned he said it would be impossible to bite through his opponent’s glove with his mouthpiece in. He also added that Mayweather might have put his glove in his mouth during the clinch.
Video replays were shown several times, but while Maidana can be seen to have his head close to Mayweather’s hand, there wasn’t any conclusive evidence that he bit him. Maidana was deducted a point in round 10 though as he pushed Mayweather down to the canvas for the second time in the contest. As for the rest of the fight, Maidana wasn’t aggressive enough to cause any damage and the champion more or less danced his way to victory over 12 rounds. The judges gave him the fight by a unanimous decision with scores of 116-111, 116-111, and 115-112.
Mayweather landed 166 punches to Maidana’s 128, but the challenger threw 572 compared to 326 by Mayweather. With the win, the 37-year-old Mayweather’s record rose to 47-0 with 26 Kos while the 31-year-old Maidana’s saw his fall to 35-5 with 31 Kos.
