Forbes magazine comes out with annual lists regarding the richest sports clubs in the world and the top-paid athletes etc. It seems like they’re sending out new lists every month, but supposedly it’s just once a year. Anyway, the newest one concerns the best-paid sports stars on the planet and once again we have a boxer ranked as number one.
The honour goes to 37-year-old American pugilist Floyd Mayweather Jr who reportedly earned $105 million over the past 12 months, which sees him top this list for the second time in the past three years. The undefeated boxer helped set a pay-per-view record for revenue last September when his bout against Saul Alvarez of Mexico pulled in $150 million on sales of 2.2 million. And let’s not forget, this is just the pay-per-view sales, we also need to take ticket sales into consideration.
When everything’s added up it’s easy to see how this guy usually makes a minimum of $30 million per fight. Mayweather’s also in a position to basically make as much money per year as he chooses since he can simply fight as many times as he likes. However, he usually climbs through the ring ropes twice a year. The undefeated boxer fought a total of 72 minutes in the past 12 months as both his fight against Alvarez and Marcos Maidana went the 12-round distance. That works out to about $1.46 million per minute.
Coming in at second place is Portuguese football star Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid. According to Forbes, Ronaldo made $80 million in the past year. He was formerly the most expensive player in the world when it comes to transfer fees, but that record was shattered last summer when Real paid 100 million euros for Welsh winger Gareth Bale of Tottenham Hotspur. It’s believed that $28 million of Ronaldo’s annual income comes through endorsements for various companies.
American basketball legend LeBron James of the Miami Heat ranks third as he took home $72.3 million last year. The four-time Most valuable Player of the NBA isn’t the highest-paid player in the league, but he brings in millions of dollars via his sponsorship deals. He is paid over $50 million per year by some of the world’s top companies such as Nike and McDonald’s
In fourth place we have another football star. This time it’s Argentine forward Lionel Messi of Barcelona. Forbes claims that Messi was paid $64.7 million over the last dozen months. Messi has also signed a new contract with Barcelona and his annual salary with the club will be $27 million. The rest of his yearly fortune comes courtesy of endorsements.
Basketball’s Kobe Bryant makes number five on the list with $61.5 million deposited into his bank account over the last year. The American, who plays for the los Angeles Lakers, is the highest-paid player in the NBA. He signed a new two-year deal last November which is worth close to $25 million a year. When it comes to female athletes, Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova is the top-paid woman at $24.4 and that ranks her at number 34 on the overall list.
