Five Puzzling Moves From NFL Free Agency

Thus far, NFL free agency has been relatively active. There haven’t been any blockbuster trades involving high profile players (except Anquan Boldin), but plenty of moves are still being made. General Managers always roll the dice this time of year, so not every signing or swap will end up paying off. That being said, some of the wheeling and dealing struck me as odd. Here are five moves that have left me scratching my head.

5) The Jets signing LaDainian Tomlinson – Didn’t the Jets kick loose an aging running back when they dumped disgruntled Thomas Jones? Then they go ahead and ink LT to a two-year deal. I realize he’ll be splitting carries with Shonn Greene, but you could easily argue Jones, who signed with the Chiefs, has more left in the tank than Tomlinson. Ironically, both backs will earn roughly the same amount of cash: $5 million and $5.4 million respectively.

4) The Broncos trading for Brady Quinn – It seems wunderkind Josh McDaniels is still searching for his franchise quarterback. The latest youngster to get a shot at the title will be former first-round pick Brady Quinn. So, McDaniels wanted Matt Cassel, didn’t want Jay Cutler, settled for Kyle Orton, and now sees star potential in Quinn. Who’s next on his list? Maybe Favre. I would suggest Denver find a way to keep Brandon Marshall if they want Brady to have any chance of success.

3) The Redskins signing Larry Johnson – Just when I was about to praise the ‘Skins for being smart and not pursuing overrated and washed-up players, they ink Larry “I Love to Beat Women and Slur Gays” Johnson to a three-year deal. Obviously, Mike Shanahan recalls the days when LJ was running roughshod on his defenses in Denver. That was a long time ago, Mike. Johnson is more apt these days to get arrested than gain 100 yards.

2) The Bengals giving Antonio Bryant $28 million – It’s the Bengals, so it’s not a shock they reached for a problem child like Bryant. Sure they need someone opposite Ocho, but Bryant, who joins his fifth team in nine seasons, is unreliable and inconsistent. They overpaid for a guy who has a history of clashing with coaches and not living up to expectations. Good luck Marvin Lewis.

1) The Browns handing the keys to Jake Delhomme – There’s a viable reason why Mike Holmgren was demoted from his GM position with the Seahawks in 2002. He sucked at the job. Getting rid of Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn makes sense. Adding Delhomme to run an offense with zero weapons is idiotic. Delhomme is a proven leader, but his arm is dead. Steve Smith made him look good. There is no Steve Smith in Cleveland.
