Whoever Spanish striker Fernando Torres suits up for this season, they’re going to have to wait at least a month before he’s fit to play again. The injury-prone forward tore a thigh muscle near the end of the world cup Final between Spain and Holland and he’s on the shelf…yet again.

While Torres is under contract to Liverpool, it’s been reported that fellow English Premier League club Chelsea would love to buy him as they attempt to defend the league title and FA Cup. The Spanish FA announced that Torres had an MRI performed at a local clinic and they confirmed a ruptured muscle to his left thigh.

It’s the least serious rupture, but it’s bad enough to keep him out of the pre season and likely the season opener in mid-August as well. It’s hard to predict what affect the injury will have on his future as Liverpool might just decide it’s in their better interests to sell him if the 26-year-old is going to spend the rest of his career in and out of hospital rooms.

It might also cause Chelsea to rethink their position as well as they’ve reportedly set aside 40 million pounds to bid for him, and Manchester City and Barcelona also seems to be interested.  Liverpool’s new manager Roy Hodgson definitely wants to keep Torres if he wants to improve on last year’s woeful season, but how healthy is Torres going to be remains the question.

Torres has said he loves playing for Liverpool, but they need to improve on last season’s seventh-place finish. However, the club looks ready to sell Javier Mascherano, so it remains to be seen who they bring in to strengthen the team as Yossi Benayoun has already left for Chelsea.

Torres suffered a groin injury and knee surgery last season, but still scored 22 goals in 32 games. However, he looked lost during the World Cup. Liverpool is certainly hoping his performance in South Africa was due to not being fit instead of loss of form.
