Kevin Millar Better Eat His Wheaties

If anyone can break a curse, it’s Kevin Millar.

At least theoretically.

As a non-roster invitee to the Chicago Cubs Spring Training camp, the goofy, old school first baseman is used to having to earn his keep. According to Millar, he’s had to fight for a position in ”at least seven” of his 13 big league camps and this year is no different.

At 38 years old, he’s facing the challenge of proving that he can back up at first base, play third under dire circumstances, and of course, pinch hit.

“This is the only way I really know,” the career .271 hitter explained. ”I’ve got an opportunity and a uniform, and I enjoy the battle.”

The Boston Red Sox breaking the Curse of the Bambino back in 2004 can obviously be credited in part to Millar’s enthusiasm and catchy slogans… like “Cowboy up” for instance.  That was a fun one.  In fact, it was so fun that he plastered the saying on both ends of his giant pickup truck.

“This is the year,” he said. “We won it in Boston in ’04 and it was nuts. If the Cubs win it in 2010, I challenge Chicago to make it as nuts or more. You’ve just got to believe this is the year.”

Of course, maybe he should try making the club before he starts making crazy promises to the Cubbie faithful.   They’re a fragile people.
