Favre Comes Back To Minnesota

The latest chapter in the Brett Favre Retirement Comeback Foregone Conclusion Hello Goodbye Tour 2010 appears to be upon us. On Tuesday, Favre was back at Vikings camp and reports were trickling out that he was there to officially sign on for another year in purple and gold.  But there was no official confirmation from Favre or the Vikings, just the scheduling of a 1:30 CST press conference for head coach Brad Childress.

Oh, the drama! Has Favre come back to Minnesota only to say goodbye to his teammates in person? Was it all just a negotiating ploy as reportedly the Vikings are increasing his salary from $13 million to $16.5 million with incentives that could take it all the way up to $20 million? Will we gain new, penetrating and illuminating insight into the psyche of this fascinating, ageless, indecisive legend?

And who wrote Favre’s return? Doesn’t it seem like something out of a badish sequel or movie version of a TV show? The Vikings sent defensive end Jared Allen, guard Steve Hutchinson and kicker Ryan Longwell to Favre’s home in Mississippi to politely tell their quarterback to shit or get off the pot.  Why send the kicker?  NFL.com says those are “three of Favre’s closest friends.” The three friends got to Mississippi too late on Monday night to have the serious shit or get off the pot talk, so they slept over at Favre’s house and began the talk the next morning.

So they started chatting, then took a break, then chatted some more.  According to Hutchinson, Favre barely mentioned his surgically repaired bionic ankle, but instead focused on personal reservations about playing another year.  But finally Favre just said, “Let’s do it.” And Favre, Favre’s wife, and Favre’s three super friends got in a purple and gold airplane and flew back to Minnesota.

If this were a movie, this bizarre arm twisting would surely end with a Vikings Super Bowl.  After hopefully a car chase.  But assuming Favre is coming back, he’s only got three weeks and a day before the Vikings open the regular season on a Thursday night in New Orleans.
