Favre Claims Indecision, But Wants To Beat Saints

Brett Favre’s return to the Minnesota Vikings seems like a foregone conclusion, but the 40-year-old quarterback told a Mississippi newspaperman that he hasn’t reached that conclusion yet.  “”I just don’t know,” Favre responded when asked if he had decided to play in 2010. “I do not want to stir the pot.”

That last bit may seem outrageous to the many fans who have grown sick of Favre taking his sweet ass time deciding if he’ll come back year after year.  But Favre blames his inability to commit on his health and surgeries, which I think is kind of understandable.  He’d look like even more of an ass if he committed to coming back and then had to take it back if he realized he just wasn’t healthy enough to play.

The quote that the paper leaked to hype up its interview was “I would love to go beat the Saints.”  The Vikings open the season against the Saints, who beat them in the NFC Championship Game.  But in context, Favre doesn’t really care about the Saints themselves, the old Wrangler Jeans salesman just wants one more chance to go out on top:

I want to win every game that I play. People tell me all the time to go beat the Saints and redeem yourself. People said the same thing with Green Bay the year before. It was, ‘You have to go back and beat Green Bay.’ I don’t want to be in my 20th year and hear people say, ‘You have to redeem yourself.’ Like I said, I would love to go beat the Saints. But what if that doesn’t happen?

Favre also knows that he’ll eventually have to stay retired — “It’s not like being a dentist or playing golf, I can’t play football forever.”

He knows the NFL doesn’t revolve around him — “I also have people telling me that when I retire, they are going to stop watching football. I know that’s B.S.”
Most of all, it seems like baring further injury, he’s definitely coming back — “I know I can still play at a high level. I know I still love to play the game.”
