Fantasy Football: Overrated/Underrated

Let’s take a look at some of the overrated and underrated players for the 2012 fantasy football season.

UNDERRATED: Jay Cutler, QB, Bears

Cutler was on his way to an outstanding season last year before he was hurt. The Bears added his football soulmate Brandon Marshall, second-round draft pick Alshon Jeffery and Michael Bush. No more Mike Martz either. Cutler will be undervalued in your draft. I expect over 30 TD passes with close to 4,000 yards passing.

UNDERRATED: Brandon Marshall, WR, Bears

People will look at Marshall’s low TD total over the last two season (6, 3) and his off-field woes, but reuniting with Cutler will be the best thing that ever happened to him as a football player. They both gush about their special connection and Marshall has looked nothing short of spectacular in preseason. Expect Denver numbers: 100 catches, 1,200 yards and 10 TDs.

UNDERRATED: Matt Ryan, QB, Falcons

“Matty Ice” has been a steady fantasy performer since starting as a rookie in 2008. Both his yards and TD totals have increased in every season. That won’t change this year with the emergence of Julio Jones, and fewer touches for Michael Turner. I expect 35 TD passes from Ryan with close to 4,500 yards. When people start plucking big name QBs early, lean back and wait for the ultimate value pick: Matt Ryan.

OVERRATED: Marshawn Lynch, RB, Seahawks

People will be snagging Lynch in the first round, but he won’t be worth it there. There are red flags all over the place. Rookie QB. Just signed a long-term deal. Complaining of injuries during preseason. History of dogging it. Off-field troubles. Possible suspension. You’re better off taking a pass on Lynch early in the draft and getting Doug Martin rounds later. The production will be about the same.

OVERRATED: Andre Johnson, WR, Texans

It’s great that Johnson was able to come back and produce in the playoffs. But he’s on the wrong side of 30, had off-season arthroscopic surgery on his knee, and has had injury woes over the last two seasons. Gone are the days of being a top-3 fantasy wideout. Johnson still has plenty of value, but he no longer makes my top 10 for wide receivers.

OVERRATED: Mike Vick, Eagles

Vick can’t stay healthy and his production last year was garbage when you consider his average draft position. Somehow, people are still talking about him like he is a top-5 QB. I don’t even place Vick in my top-10 for QBs. Cutler and Ryan are far better options. I wouldn’t take Vick except as a backup.
